Revolutionizing Catering in Indonesia: Our Journey Towards Sustainability

Updated: May 5, 2024

In the diverse and dynamic landscape of Indonesia's catering industry, we group of like-minded individuals recognized a pressing need for change. As passionate advocates for environmental conservation, we embarked on a mission to overhaul traditional catering practices and pave the way for a sustainable future. Our journey began with a stark realization of the environmental consequences of conventional catering methods. We observed the overwhelming reliance on single-use plastics, excessive packaging, and inefficient waste management systems. This abundance of disposable materials contributed significantly to pollution and ecological degradation, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable alternatives.

A Shared Vision Takes Root

United by a passion for environmental stewardship, we coalesced around a shared vision—to revolutionize the catering industry in Indonesia by championing sustainability. Our vision was not merely to address symptoms but to fundamentally transform the way catering was conceptualized and executed, placing sustainability at its core. We recognized the urgent need for sustainable solutions in the catering industry, particularly in a country as vibrant and food-centric as Indonesia. With a deep commitment to preserving our planet for future generations, we set out to revolutionize the way catering products are sourced, manufactured, and utilized.

Research and Development Phase

As we continue on our journey towards a greener, more sustainable future, our business remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation and impact. We envision a world where eco-friendly catering products are not just a niche offering but a standard practice embraced by all. With each new product iteration, partnership, and initiative, we are inching closer to that reality, one sustainable serving at a time. Armed with determination and a clear mission, we delved into intensive research and development. Our focus was on identifying and sourcing eco-friendly materials, exploring compostable packaging options, and innovating new approaches that would minimize waste while upholding the quality and integrity of catering services. We also found out that :-The economic loss due to the Food loss waste generation in Indonesia in 2000 - 2019 is approximately IDR 213-551 trillion/year or equals 4-5% of Indonesia's GDP.

- Food loss occurs in the first three stages, while food waste arises in the last two stages. The percentage of food loss in 20 years shows declining, from 61% in 2000 to 45% in 2019, with an average of 56%. Conversely, the percentage of food waste generation in 20 years increased, from 39% in 2000 to 55% in 2019, with an average of 44%

-The number of people that can be fed from the loss of nutrition (energy) from FLW in 2000 - 2019 is 61-125 million people, or 29-47% of Indonesia's population.Overcoming Industry Challenges

The path towards sustainability was met with challenges inherent to an industry accustomed to conventional practices. From navigating supply chain complexities to addressing skepticism within the market, each hurdle required strategic thinking and steadfast commitment. However, these challenges fueled our resolve to innovate and disrupt the status quo.

Introducing Sustainable Solutions

With our research and development phase yielding promising results, we began implementing sustainable solutions in real-world catering scenarios. We introduced reusable serving ware, sourced locally grown produce, and curated menus that celebrated seasonal ingredients. These initiatives not only reduce waste but also elevated the culinary experience.

Catalyzing Industry-wide Change

Our efforts did not go unnoticed. As early adopters of sustainable practices, we catalyzed a shift within the industry landscape. Other catering companies began to recognize the value of sustainability, inspired by our success and driven by consumer demand for environmentally responsible services. This momentum propelled a broader movement towards greener practices.

Looking Towards a Sustainable Future

As we reflect on our journey thus far, we remain committed to pushing boundaries and advancing the cause of sustainability within Indonesia's catering industry. Our vision extends beyond individual initiatives to encompass a broader movement towards systemic change. We envision a future where sustainability is not a niche concept but an industry standard, ingrained in every facet of catering operations.
